Mattias Nyström
Bridging the GAP between frontline safety and boardroom strategy.
Occupational Health & Safety Executive. Combining high-risk practical execution with enterprise-level risk governance to engineer Safety-II cultures that protect both the frontline workforce and the boardroom.
My Safety Philosophy
A modern, systems-thinking approach to high-risk operational management.
Hard-Wired Engineering
Administrative rules and "safety clutter" do not catch falling objects. I believe in designing physical engineering controls directly into the workspace to remove human error from the equation before it occurs. (Strict LOTO isolation protocols apply).
Proactive Safety-II
Safety is not merely the absence of accidents (Safety-I). It is the ability to succeed under varying, messy conditions. I focus on actionable leading indicators to build system resilience, rather than just reacting to lagging injury data.
Restorative Just Culture
A punitive blame culture ensures that critical hazards remain hidden. I champion psychological safety and non-punitive reporting frameworks, ensuring frontline workers are empowered to speak up without fear of retaliation.
From the Dirt to the Boardroom
My career isn't built purely on theory. I am an OH&S professional actively operating in high-risk environments, utilizing competencies like Working at Heights and EWP. I understand that boardroom compliance (Work-as-Imagined) rarely survives contact with the gritty reality of site execution (Work-as-Done).
However, modern safety is no longer just about tactical compliance, it's an existential corporate vulnerability. With the enforcement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic) and the liabilities of Section 39G (workplace manslaughter), boards require more than site audits. They require systemic resilience.
My unique advantage: I speak both languages. I leverage Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) and Safety-II methodologies to engineer out human error. By shifting from retroactive fault-finding to predictive Enterprise Critical Risk Governance, I align frontline psychological safety with commercial ROI, reducing operational friction and shielding the enterprise from liability.
Strategic ROI
Delivering commercial ROI via systemic risk reduction and proactive compliance.
Execution
Daily deployment of high-risk licensing in dynamic, live-traffic environments.
Safety Insights & Case Studies
Practical analysis and strategic breakdowns of safety challenges in complex operational environments.
Systemic Breakdown in High-Risk Operations: SMS Failure & Dropped Object Analysis
An investigation into a high-potential (HiPo) dropped object incident, analyzing the intersection of cumulative fatigue, supervision gaps, and the transition from reactive to proactive safety metrics.
Bridging the Compliance Void: Operationalizing Victoria's 2025 Psychosocial Regulations and Silica Standards within High-Yield Infrastructure
A boardroom-level blueprint for engineering systemic resilience against Victoria's 2025 Psychosocial Regulations and the 0.025 mg/m³ Silica WES within high-yield infrastructure.
The Adaptive Edge: Engineering Resilience in High-Risk Operations
A synthesis of extreme wilderness survival mechanics and industrial fatigue management, introducing the Predictive Resilience Matrix to shift crews from reactive compliance to proactive psychological safety.
Licenses & High-Risk Competencies
Active qualifications enabling immediate site deployment and practical safety auditing.
